This Southern Wisconsin homeowner had a goal of zero net electric bill with enough excess energy for a future Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). The site has direct Southern exposure and all landscaping is clear of the roof to prevent shading. Watts Up Engineering installed a solar setup producing an estimated 15,600 kWh annually. Plus, we installed a charging port for the future BEV in the garage.
This Wisconsin homeowner had limited roof space for solar. So, Watts Up Engineering installed a solar array over 500 feet away from the home on their riding arena. The array produces over 30,000 kWh annually; enough for their home and BEV. Plus, we assisted the homeowner with a heat pump pool heater and a hybrid electric water heater to reduce their reliance upon propane.
No site is perfect and this one was no different. The westernmost (left in top picture) roof area had shading from a medium deciduous tree. Shading analysis showed a potential for significant electric production gains with minor tree trimming, which the homeowner performed prior to installation. Other site preparation included comprehensive main circuit panel reorganization. Also, structural analysis showed the original truss designs lacked sufficient bracing, which we corrected prior to installation and permitting.
This satisfied customer is enjoying the benefits of a net zero yearly electric bill. The install is a 14 kW system with an annual production of over 22,000 kW-hrs. Plus, we designed the system for a phase 2 future expansion of 6 kW to create a 20 kW system with an annual production of over 30,000 kW-hrs. During the install, we had the opportunity to place the equipment for future electric vehicle charging and a battery backup. This install required structural engineering, zoning, permitting, and utility interconnection services. Contact us to find out how we can help you on your journey to energy independence.
